City’s youth to help design tailored youth service across Brighton & Hove

Young people will be more involved than ever in what services they use and how they use them under a revamped city-wide programme to support 13-19 year olds.

Brighton and Hove’s community and voluntary sector providers beat off national competition to win the three-year contract worth more than £480,000 that starts this month. Their proven track record, existing relationships and ability to work together bolstered their bid as they start work alongside Brighton & Hove City Council’s Youth Service.

Sexual health and substance misuse work is a crucial part of successful outcomes for young people and an extra £30,000 has been raised to be invested in this area. This aims to ensure young people are equipped with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make informed decisions about sexual health and substance misuse.

A further £50,000 of partnership investment has also been secured through Artswork, the South East Bridge organisation, to increase opportunities for children and young people to engage in arts and cultural activities.

The Youth Collective comprises Impact Initiatives’ Young People’s Centre, Hangleton & Knoll Project, The Deans Youth Project, Crew Club, Trust for Developing Communities, Brighton Youth Centre, Sussex Central YMCA and Tarnerland Youth Project.

Around 2,000 young people a year will benefit from a new youth work ‘curriculum’ that features arts & culture, sport, cooking as well as IT and is designed to inspire and challenge.

The arts and culture programme will see more young people than ever before achieve Arts Award, which is a qualification that supports young people to develop as artists and arts leaders. It will give youth providers opportunities to work in partnership with the City’s leading arts and cultural providers specifically Arts Council England National Portfolio Organisations, music education hubs, as well as museums and libraries.

A major part of the contract is for young people to influence and help shape the services that affect their lives and also have the opportunity to be active citizens by being involved in youth work and community activities.

There will also be closer links with equalities teams, local businesses, schools, services which work with NEET young people

Brighton & Hove City Council Chair of the Children and Young People Committee Cllr Sue Shanks said:

“Young people in our communities need places to go, things to do and people to talk to. Our revamped services aim to improve the way we provide youth work across our city.

“Youth services play a vital role in keeping our young residents safe, healthy and reaching their full potential. From the young woman from the most deprived estate getting into trouble with the police to the young man at risk of contracting a sexually transmitted disease, our services aim to engage early on to divert people to engage in positive activity in the community.

“By using existing local services we can engage with far more young residents and by involving 13-19 year olds in the design of services we aim to ensure that young people’s voices are heard at all different levels. Young people will also be able to plan and fundraise for activities for their peers and decide how funds are spent.”

Artswork Chief Executive Jane Bryant said:

“Our partnership investment, which is one of the first of its type across England, will ensure that youth providers will work strategically and in partnership with arts and cultural organisations to improve the delivery of cultural opportunities for young people.”

Young residents who have already benefited from the city’s services praised the award.

“As a young person benefiting from youth services in Brighton & Hove it’s great to see the youth funding going to the B&H Youth Collective who are made up of organisations that young people know and trust,” said 19 year old Fahim Uddin from the Crew Club who has used the Brighton Music Hub.

“This funding will help many more young people like me to build confidence, feel relaxed in their communities, gain more confidence and learn new skills, said 19 year old Jordan Lee on the Crew Club’s Foundation Learning course.

Notes:

Artswork is a national youth arts development agency. It is acting as the Arts Council funded Bridge Organisation for the South East region. One of just 10 such organisations in England, its role is to better connect children and young people with the work of arts and cultural organisations – especially those children young people with least current access.

MOORE, Oklahoma – Three Moore Police officers were put on administrative leave while detective investigate an in-custody death from overnight. The family of the man who died said police beat him badly and they recorded it with a cell phone camera.

Nair Rodriguez and her daughter Lunahi told News 9 they got into an argument at the Warren Theater around midnight. Nair said she slapped her daughter then stormed away. Her husband, Luis, chased after her. That was when the family said officers confronted Luis Rodriguez and asked to see his identification.

According to Lunahi and Nair, he tried to bypass the officers to stop his wife from driving off because she was so angry. They said officers took him down and it escalated.

Lunahi Rodriguez said that five officers beat her father to death right in front of her, in the parking lot of the movie theater.

“When they flipped him over you could see all the blood on his face, it was, he was disfigured, you couldn’t recognize him.”

By the time it was all over, Nair Rodriguez said that she knew her husband was dead.

“I saw him. His [motionless] body when people carry it to the stretcher,” she explained. “I knew that he was dead.”

Nair says her husband was only trying to defuse the fight she was having with her daughter. She said when police asked her about it she told them what happened.

“I told them I hit her and he was just trying to reach me. Why didn’t they arrest me?”

Lunahi added, “My mom was taking a video and asking, ‘What are they doing this for? Why?’ And they didn’t give really an explanation.”

Rodriguez told News 9 that police took her phone with the recording on it. Another family member provided News 9 with an audio recording she said was taken when that happened. The family hoped Luis would pull through, so they waited for news at the hospital.

“Two hours passed. They finally called her up to say, ‘Oh you could see him,’ but it turned out it was a lie. They moved his body elsewhere,” said Lunahi.

The family told News 9 they would hire an attorney.

We are urging County Council Chair Tim McGinley to require Lt. John Ameen to appear before Council this Tuesday, the 18th, so he could answer a simple question, “Has LCCF management eaten meals different from those cooked for inmates.” This should require a simple “Yes” or “No” response. The whole intent of the Home Rule Charter was to provide greater transparency in county government. Every indication is that food purchases made for the prison include items not offered on the inmate menu. Soooooooooooo, let’s get the guy responsible for ordering, get it on record, and ask the question, Mr. McGinley.

Trooper stumbles for words after realizing man’s replica black powder revolver is not considered a firearm under Texas law

On a visit to the Texas state capital to show his appreciation for the Second Amendment right that we all enjoy, Texas Open Carry board member Terry Holcomb was arrested by Texas state troopers who appeared ignorant of state firearm laws.

CBS-11 has learned two state troopers involved in a controversial roadside cavity search of two North Texas women have been indicted on criminal charges by a Dallas County Grand Jury.

CBS-11 has learned that one of the troopers, Kelley Helleson, who left the courthouse after testifying Friday, is charged with two counts of sexual assault and two counts of official oppression.

She was seen on dashcam video searching the body cavities — front and back — of the two women along an exit ramp of the Bush Turnpike in Irving last summer.

As reported by David Knight, California law enforcement is now confiscating legally purchased guns from registered gun owners who have been labeled “Armed Prohibited Persons” (APPs.)

Police shoved two M16s within inches of gun owner Joe Mendez’s face during a raid on his house to seize his legally-purchased firearms.

Fourteen officers total were involved.

Police even showed up later to lie to Mendez’s wife about the raid, saying that they were only taking a report after her car was involved in a “hit and run.”

All of the targeted APPs had purchased their firearms legally but the State of California declared afterwards that they were prohibited from gun ownership due to minor misdemeanor convictions or mental health concerns.

Gov. Jerry Brown even signed a bill this past spring to expand the program by spending million to hire an additional 36 officers for a total of 69 agents to track down nearly 20,000 people on the APP list.

Before they can embark on gun confiscations, officers perform “tedious, expensive and time-consuming work, requiring hours of background checks and cross-referencing,” as reported by NPR.

“There’s a lot of work that goes into these,” said California Dept. of Justice spokesperson Michelle Gregory to NPR. “People aren’t always home, there’s different stories as to where the firearms may be and there’s a lot of follow-up [that] needs to happen after.”

“So there’s still going to be a lot of work even after they come out to these homes trying to confiscate these weapons.”

A Harvard Study titled “Would Banning Firearms Reduce Murder and Suicide?” looks at figures for “intentional deaths” throughout continental Europe and juxtaposes them with the U.S. to show that more gun control does not necessarily lead to lower death rates or violent crime.

Because the findings so clearly demonstrate that more gun laws may in fact increase death rates, the study says that “the mantra that more guns mean more deaths and that fewer guns, therefore, mean fewer deaths” is wrong.

For example, when the study shows numbers for Eastern European gun ownership and corresponding murder rates, it is readily apparent that less guns to do not mean less death. In Russia, where the rate of gun ownership

“She is very embarrassed. She’s never been in this situation before,” Finn said. “She has expressed remorse for any inconvenience for any public safety officials.”

According to Finn, Nugent does not have a criminal record.

Sugar Land Public Safety Dispatch Receives Total Response Reaccreditation – 911 Dispatcher Training Programs

https://911dispatcherprograms.wordpress.com/2016/07/20/sugar-land-public-safety-dispatch-receives-total-response-reaccreditation/

Sugar Land Public Safety Dispatch in Texas has earned a two-year Total Response Reaccreditation for emergency call handling. Total Response Accreditation is provided by 911 call-handling-system provider PowerPhone. Reaccreditation demonstrates an agency’s continued commitment to quality and accountability in emergency call handling and was awarded after a thorough agency audit.

This reaccreditation highlights Sugar Land Public Safety Dispatch’s ongoing commitment to advancing its documented 911 call-handling standard of care. Since receiving accreditation in 2012, Sugar Land has made significant upgrades including moving from paper call-handling tablets to PowerPhone’s streamlined computer-aided call handling software (CACH) and incorporating integrated fire and emergency medical call handling protocols. Adoption of CACH allowed Sugar Land Public Dispatch’s CAD vendor (SunGard OSSI) to interface with CACH for seamless communication between software programs to dispatch and update responders in real time as information is obtained from 911 callers.

Reaccreditation also highlights Sugar Land Public Safety Dispatch’s dedication to training and continuing education. Audit results demonstrate that Sugar Land has surpassed Texas’ mandated minimum continuing education level and all employee certifications in EMD and FSD are current and valid, including five employees who have also been certified in Call Assessment.

Call assessment plays a vital role in regularly monitoring agency performance against their defined standard of care. Since upgrading to CACH, Sugar Land has attained powerful new assessment tools to evaluate trends in systematic performance, which they have incorporated well into the call assessment process.

Sugar Land Public Safety Dispatch has done an excellent job defining, achieving, and measuring compliance with their 911 call-handling standard of care, according to PowerPhone; Total Response reaccreditation affirms their ongoing commitment to strengthening 911 operations and providing the community with the high-quality 911 call handling.

https://911dispatcherprograms.wordpress.com/2016/07/20/pennsylvania-corrections-officer-attacked-killed-in-fall-down-elevator-shaft/

Corrections officer Kris Moules, 25, was killed in a fight with an inmate Monday night at the Luzerne County Prison in Wilkes-Barre, PA, when the two men fell down an elevator shaft.

Both the officer and the inmate are dead and county officials are pledging to make sure nothing like this ever happens again, reports WNEP.

Luzerne County manager David Pedri said at a news conference Tuesday afternoon that the incident occurred Monday shortly before 6 p.m. after a fight broke out on the fifth floor. He said they crashed into the elevator doors, and the doors somehow opened.

The two men then fell five flights to their deaths.

“It’s a sad and tragic matter, a freak accident, that we will learn from, and a matter that will help us get better,” said Pedri.

The elevator door is blocked off with wood, and police are investigating why those elevators doors suddenly opened.

At least 23 Russian servicemen were killed and 19 were injured after military barracks collapsed in the Siberian city of Omsk on Sunday evening, Reuters reported.

The incident happened at around 11 PM, when part of the roof in a section of the building caved in causing several floors to collapse.

A plane with medical equipment was sent from Moscow and some of the injured soldiers were flown to the capital for treatment.

According to state-run television channel Rossiya 24 quote by the Wall Street Journal, it is not clear what caused the building to collapse and investigators are looking into possible causes and examining the quality of the building’s renovation work three years ago.

The barracks were built in 1975 and had been used as a training facility for paratroopers.

According to Reuters the training centre was also used for training junior officers and armoured infantry vehicle drivers, among others.

Russia is well known for poor safety standards in buildings construction.

Two people were killed over the weekend after a residential building in the city of Perm collapsed.
